Purpose:
On March 23, 2010, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved the White Flint Sector Plan. The White Flint Sector Plan will guide development in White Flint over the next thirty years. The major purpose of the Plan is to change White Flint from an automobile-clogged suburb into a vibrant, transit-oriented, sustainable urban center.
One of the challenges of the new White Flint Plan will be to provide access to all the new attractions and amenities in the new White Flint for residents of communities near the White Flint Sector, while also protecting local communities from congestion and disruption, including "traffic calming" and "cut-through traffic."
On May 13 and 14, 2010, the Friends of White Flint hosted internationally-reknowned mobility and urban design planner Ian Lockwood for a series of presentations and discussions about neighborhood mobility within the new White Flint. The discussions focussed on pedestrian, bicycle, disabled, and resident access and participation in the new White Flint, and on "best practices" in protecting neighborhoods.
On Thursday evening, May 13, from 7:30 to 10PM, there was a special presentation and discussion for residents. During Thursday and Friday, May 13 and 14, Lockwood met with various neighborhoods and other groups to discuss individual or local problems and solutions.
